Coldwater Pit is located in the valley near Sevenstar Mountain and Cheegoo Mountain. It got it's name because the water temperature of this spring is only around ４０℃. In comparison with the other "hot"springs, she is considered "cold".

　Coldwater Pit used to be a small volcanic burst hole. What is more special about her is that the color of her water is milky, thus gaining a special name called Milkpool. In addition to the milky water, she possess a type of germ which stands high temperature, which is the reason why we can see some of the earliest form of plantlife near this hotspring .

Coldwater Pit hotspring belong to the neutral carbon type of spring with a pH of around 6. 5 and a temperature around40℃. Although it is substantially lower than other hotspring, but as long as it's about 6 degrees above human temperature, it can still be called a hotspring .

Coldwater Pit is located near the Gold Mountain breaklayer and the Kunfeet breaklayer. Because the heat actions are vigorous around this area, there are a lot of unique rocks being formed due to their geological movements. We can also see the eruption hole of volcanoes. 　In fact, this is one of the reasons why hotspring are everywhere near this region.

　This is the only region in the nation that possess the residue type of hotspring , which in turn makes the water colors look a little murky, thus giving it its nickname: the milkpool, because the residue level is around 20 to 40 percent.

During the 60's, due to a lack of energy supplies and the oil crisis, the world began looking for ways to substitute this energy sources, and Coldwater Pit was chosen because of her abundant heat underground, and there was a research center established near here for that purpose alone. Unfortunately, the hotspring near this region are mostly acidic, thus making them easily eroded, and because the crisis was relieved a few years later, now what's left of the center is just an old building..

Coldwater Pit hotspring can be divided into two parts: the tourist-based Coldwater Pit hotspring hole filled with beautiful yellowish crystals.

　 The other part is located right below the hole, which is the famous milkypool where the spring water shows a milky color due to the residue in it. Dipping here is a special experience.

　In 1992, the Yangmingshan National Park office built two free hotspring dipping rooms for the use of citizens. And because this is on the way to the beautiful Sevenstar Mountains and waterfalls, it has become one of the most favorite tourist spots.

1, What do you think of the sanitary conditions here?

• It's okay. People watch each other's backs. If someone goes in without taking a shower, we tend to warn him for everyone's sake. If this was to happen in a paying dipping room, we wouldn't be able to warn him because he already paid his money.
• We've never seen the National Park people come clean the place, but there are some volunteers who clean up the place for everyone, usually around 8 or 9 in the morning.

2,what do you think can be improved here?

• Many talk about the place being too small. We don't even have a decent place to put our clothes on or take them off. On busier times, it's like cooking dumplings if you want to take a dip here
• The transportation could be a little more frequent and convenient. There is only an hourly bus, and it only starts on Sundays, making it really tough to communte here. Sanitary problems is another concern for us.
