1.What's the definition of a hotspring?
¢Ï:When rain drops and goes below
the ground, it would get heated and come back up to the surface,
and when its temperature is more than human temperature or
if it's 5 5¢J above the average temperature of the region,
then it would be called a hotspring.
2.How are hotsprings formed?
¢Ï:There are three elements:
¡]1¡^ presence of hot water underground.
¡]2¡^ Still-water pressure which causes the hot water to go
up.
¡]3¡^ There must be long, deep cracks in the rock layers underground
for the spring to go up through.
3.How do you categorize hotsprings?
¢Ï:Usually there are three types.
The first one is called "Green spring".
They are underground water mixed with volcanic gas and small
amounts of surface water. They are high in temperature and
acidic, like the ones in Underground Valley. The second kind
is called a white spring.
It's less hot and less acidic. The third kind is called iron
spring, which is about 40 to 50 degrees celcius, located near
Ding Baytow.
4.How are the hotspring resources in Taiwan?
¢Ï:Tremendous. Among the top 15 in
the world.
5.What is a man-made spring ?
¢Ï:They come mainly from vapor springs,
which means that we dig underground-heatholes, and when water
passes through the vapors, they're heated, and thus form a
man-made hotspring.
6.Where did the Hotspring Museum originate
from?
¢Ï:It used to be a luxurious place
for the Japanese and the rich to hang out in, and it wasn't
until 1910 did the original Tanglong Bathplace become a public
bathplace, and the memory of so many residents in
Baytow. In 1996, a bunch of elementary school children from
Baytow Elementaryp Petitioned for the renovation of the place,
and thus we are lucky to see what is now the hotspring museum.
7.Where's the first Baytow bathplace?
¢Ï:Tien-go An, opened in March, 1896,
by the Japanese Pingtien Yunwoo.
8.What are "radium springs"?
¢Ï:Baytow creek produces Baytow rocks,
which are famous for containing small dosages of radium. Thus
the Japanese are crazy about this place, because they're considered
magical in Japan.
9.Is the Coldwater Pit a cold or hot spring?
¢Ï:It's only about 40¢J, which is
colder than most springs. But by definition, it is a hotspring.
10.The Sulfur Spring, which is considered
therapeutic by the Japanese are found where in Taiwan?
¢Ï:Baytow, Yangmingshan, and Green
Island.
11.Where's the relic of "grass mountain"

¢Ï:It's what is now the Taipei Teachers'
Training Center.
12.The categorization of Baytow Hotsprings?
¢Ï:Green spring is about 100 degrees,
while the white spring is about 50 degrees. The green is good
for cooking eggs and playing, while the white heals and is
most suitable for middle-aged bath-takers.
13.How are Yangmingshan hotsprings formed¡H
¢Ï:They resulted from the eruptions
of the Dahtoon volcanic region. Even though it has not been
active for a long time, but the underground water is still
heated when they go through the underground region of this
area, and thus hotsprings are formed.
14.What are the advantages of dipping?
¢Ï:According to people who dip in
public tubs, it is quite safe to take dips there because usually
the people who are willing to show their body in public carry
no disease. In addition, it might be safer to have people
around in case of some emergency.
15.Should I warm up before dipping?
¢Ï:Dipping is very similar to swimming.
The body can not take too big of a change in temperature.
Thus it is always recommended that people take a little warmup
bath before entering a tub. People should start with their
feet, and gradually work up their body. If the water seems
too hot at first, the person may wish to take a half-dip,
meaning that you only dip to breast height, and gradually
dip the entire body.
16.How long is a suitable dip?
¢Ï:You should always start from a
lower temperature tub. The advised time is about five minutes.
You should stand up and rest for a while after five minutes.
And if you wish, go back in. The cycle takes about half an
hour to complete ( 6 dips ) and we don't advise you to dip
more than three separate times a day. If your pulse raises
up to over 120 times a minute, then it's time to get up.
17.When should I stop dipping?
¢Ï:If you experience irregular heartbeat,
or dizziness occurs, it's time to get up and leave. Always
check the ventilation of the room you're dipping in.
18.Should I dip alone or with company?
¢Ï:Dipping is an enjoyable thing.
Thus we should share good things with friends. So we don't
advise you to dip on your own, for safety reasons as well.
19.What's the right temperature for dipping?
¢Ï:¢²¢·¡Ð¢³¢±¢J is most suitable. Beware
of speedy bloodflow resulting from dipping in overhigh temperature.
20.Can I move or exercise in the tub?
¢Ï:Keeping yourself relaxed and at
ease is one of the key elements to a successful dip. Thus
it is always better not to make movements in a tub. Besides,
such an action may irritate other dippers in the tub.
21.Why should we drink water before dipping?
¢Ï:To keep a balance within your
body. You should always be careful not to drink too much coffee,
tea, smoke, or consume alcohol before entering, lest too much
stimulus to the body.
22.What are the things not to do when dipping?
¢Ï:Do not dip when hungry, full,
sleepless, or when tired. Such acts may result in cardiac
arrests or other medical conditions. Do not dip after drinking
alcohol for the bloodflow may be too speedy. Women who are
pregnant or are during their period should not dip, either.
Patients with heart disease or other serious illness should
not dip.
23.Is dipping for all ages?
¢Ï:No. Children under 12 should not
dip. If parents insists on taking them for a dip, we recommend
going to a kid's pool, where the temperature is lower.
24.Is it right to have a massage after dipping?
¢Ï:Most hotspring hotels offer such
services, but it's in fact a wrong type of behavior. The recommended
thing to do is simply relax after a dip because the bloodflow
would be already fast. Adding a massage would simply make
the body more uncomfortable.
25.Can one dip in a bathing suit?
¢Ï:The correct way to dip is to lie
in a tub and quietly relax and enjoy the water on your skin.
Some hotspring s are hot and wearing a bathing suit might
be too dangerous for the body temperature may rise to a certain
level. So only wear a bathing suit when the water temperature
is quite low.
26.Can we lose weight by entering an "ovenroom"
after taking a dip?
¢Ï:It is not safe to do that. The
eyes lose its ability to produce tears for a short while immediately
following a dipping session. Thus germs may grow easier within
the eyes during that period of time. And being in a hot and
dry environment adds to the danger.
27.Which is better? Public or private tubs?
¢Ï:According to people who dip in
public tubs, it is quite safe to take dips there because usually
the people who are willing to show their body in public carry
no disease. In addition, it might be safer to have people
around in case of some emergency.
